The vir(tu)al democracy disorient us

One of the first and coolest stand up comedian in Italy talks about “a disoriented train of life, the confusion created today by a virtual and viral form of democracy we were not prepared for: there’re so many opportunity of expression offered by technology. 7 billion people, suddenly, speak, express opinions, and add information. The result is an agglomeration of contradictions that ends up disorienting us”.

Cinzia Leone is great. First, it’s a pleasure to see a “real” woman on a stage which usually host them less and less. A person who refuses the useless and goes straight to the point, always accustomed to look around, building her shows on what she observes, the changes that overwhelm us, (as good Italians).

We’re here talking about one of our “oldest” stand up comedian in Italy. Or better we would say “satirical actress”. She’s almost 60 now but in the 1991 she risked to die : after an aneurysm, she had a complicated intervention in the USA, because nobody in Italy dared to perform it for the high mortality rate (80%). After surgery, she was paralyzed at the left side of the body, and still remain some difficulties that she express with naturalness, but she’s ok now. She’s back on the stage.

Playing with a more famous train, with Disorient Express, her last show, Cinzia tells to the theater “a disoriented train of life, the confusion created today by a virtual and viral form of democracy that we were not prepared for: there are so many opportunities of expression offered by technology. 7 billion people, suddenly, speak, express opinions, and add information. The result is an agglomeration of contradictions that ends up disorienting us”.

And how could a human being not be disoriented, swept every minute by a change? How could we even be satisfied with any job, at a time when, whatever you do, it’s not paid and the maximum you can hope is to put it in… the re-ass-ume?”

Cinzia Leone è la presentatrice di Disorient Express, "il primo Tg disorientativo contemporaneo, nel senso che vi dice la notizia e contemporaneamente vi dice che non è vera"
Cinzia Leone as announcer of Disorient Express, “the first disorientative contemporary Tv News that tells you the news and at the same time that they aren’t true”.

But above all, “how can we be sure of ourselves and the reality surrounding us if , on the internet, we can find denials of any tv news?”

Disorient Express is infact the Tv News able to make declarations and denials comfortbly on its own. Like journalists are no longer needed. Many may have come to observe so many news where everything seems to be true, and the opposite too. From what is good and then bad for our health to what is really happening in the chronicles, the “conspiracy theories”, the opinions, but also all the researches and numbers of all kinds, often discordant and disparate. Where is the objectivity of the facts over?

So technology confuses instead of simplifying? “No, this is not the case”, Cinzia says in an interview for Leggo, “internet is just the first media showing us that reality is not simple, rather complicated, and it becomes even more complicated when so many people have the opportunity to express their thoughts”.

Also because, if social networks on one hand give us the expression, on the other, they’re lacking in the intimacy of communication: “Why did we bring up a word as sharing? Seems a little excessive. I’ve shared the mortgage on facebook, but then I paid for it”.

In all these changes, from the “Tv of the Girls” of the Eighties to today, everything and nothing seems to have changed in Cinzia. She is always there, one of the few, and stronger than ever with her satire that can be both easy and almost philosophical, a goal that can reach only those who are able to see the small and big movements of the world.
